• Slightly disappointing food

  We went to Gurkha Kitchen on a Thursday night. It's pretty big inside (the restaurant area is in the downstairs area, so don't be fooled if you look in the window!) and done up very nicely. It was quite quiet for a Thursday, but I expect that has something to do with the current financial climate!I've never been to a Nepalese restaurant before, so I was interested to find out what it would be like. I was a bit disappointed with the food however. My starter was a bit like a cross between a spring roll and a samosa - it was good, but a bit lacking in flavour. Also, it was supposed to come with a mustard and mint dressing - all I got was some lettuce leaves with some sort of oily dressing on it. No mustard. No mint.Then my main, which was called Rara chicken - chicken pieces in a spiced tomato sauce with cream and almonds. The sauce was very nice. Similar to some dishes you'd get in an Indian restaurant, but with slightly different spicing. However, the texture of the chicken put me off a bit - it was that really soft chicken that almost dissolves when you bite into it. The way that chicken just does not naturally occur. I don't know what they do to it, but I don't like it! And also, I didn't see nor taste any almonds in my dish.Overall the experience was fine - nice place, great service and the food was ok. But I probably wouldn't choose to go back as there are places I'd rather eat.
